Hello Betty
The answer is yes about the whites being cruel to non whites. It was however during a period when the north was experiencing an explosive growth in industrial factories. Many of our people moved up north thinking that it would be easier and found that life was more crowded , more slums and just as much poverty except this was on a level they had never seen before. Soon we got hip to moving in numbers for financial help as well as strength. A person would go and send for entire Sconiers Clan members. I do know that my grandmother told me that the whites were really hateful towards them, and even burned down a home that her husband my grandfather had built. It was one of the most beautiful homes in our ancestrial part of Alabama. What's worse is that it was done at the hands of other blacks who were instructed by the whites to do so while everyone was in church. Go figure.

God Bless
