Ruth,
I have a grandfather named John Scully who was left in a New York orphanage sometime before 1870. He was born in 1865. The family story is that his two brothers left him in the orphanage after their father, who was captain of a Great Lakes ship, went down with his ship. Have you heard anything of the sort? Have you found anything about James and Ed's family prior to 1870?
