At first I thought the following were your family, but the dates don't fit. However, there must be some relationship because of the names. In Colby, Clark Co., WI, 1880, the FamilySearch database has
SOHN, William, 42, he & parents b. Nassau
wf. Anna, 27, she & parents b. Saxo(ny?); children b. WI:
Fred, 11; William, 9; Susannah, 8; Emma, 6; Louis, 4; & Lizzie, 2.
In 1930, the database shows only one person named SOHN of Beadle Co., SD: Louis H., b. ca. 1869. Could he have been working there before the family joined him?
Castle Garden, NY, has several immigrants.

Social Security Death Index has Elmer H. SOHN (16 Sep. 1908 - 6 Jan. 1998, last res. Newton, Manitowoc, WI). If that might be your Elmer, perhaps his obituary and death certificate would help.
