Hi! Thanks for contacting me. Eva Roeder was born in Prussia (Trier?) between 1839-1842 (depending what census you believe). She came to the US in either 1870 or 1873. In November 1873 she married Johann/John Greiner in Dubuque at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. This was John's second marriage. He was married to Maria Pott - both from Fershweiler, Germany. They had three children but I don't know if they were born here or in Germany. Maria died in Dubuque in 1870. Eva and John had two children: Barbara - born in 1875, who was run over by a wagon and died at age 2 and Nicholas (Nic) born 2-9-1879 or 80. John died in Dubuque on March 10, 1877 and was buried with Maria and Barbara. Eva and Nic relocated to Rock Valley, Iowa in about 1892 but Eva sold her home and moved back to Dubuque in 1895. I don't know for how long. Did she still have relatives there? Nic would have been only been 15-16, where was he? Nic married Mary Henningfeld in May 1900. Nic and Mary had two children: Henry (my grandfather) and Frances. Eva died at age 77 from stomach cancer in 1922 (if memory serves me right). She is buried with John, Maria and Barbara in Dubuque. I know of two brothers to Eva: John Roeder and Peter Roeder. Both brothers moved from Illinois to Iowa to Rollingstone, Minnesota. I searched their death certs which listed Father = Rader, Mother = (one said Brakley) and (one said Barkley) (the family always thought it was Braihlin. John Roeder's son Peter married Susanna Brang, had two children: John Jr. and Margaret. This Margaret Rader married Henry Greiner (Nic's son). They had one daughter, Irene, who married James Curtright in Anoka MN in 1953, they had one daughter (me) born in Minneapolis 3-10-1957. So you see, there are A LOT of connections between the Greiner and Roeder/Rader family! I have 27 sets (spouses) of John and Margaret Raders!

I bought a 30-day membership to Newspaperarchives.com and was thrilled to find the Rock Valley (Iowa) Bee finally microfilmed. Nic owned several business there and when I search on "Greiner" it brought up 1500+ hits of which I read each one! It was in the good old gossip columns where I found a lot of information: Nic went to Rollingstone to attend the funeral of his uncle John; Mrs. Margaret Kohl was here visiting her sister Mrs. Eva Greiner (or Eva went to Sioux Falls to visit her sister Margaret). There were about a dozen of the Eva/Margaret references between 1905-1912. I searched for an obituary of Margaret in SD with no luck. I figured she must have died shortly after 1912 as there were no more visits and she is not mentioned as a survivor in Eva's obit. I get the feeling that she was a widow as there is never any mention of her husband. John and Peter had already died when Eva died. I found a Matthias Roeder and a Petrus Roeder in the baptismal files of St. Michael's Church in Chicago back in 1870-71. They both list their birthplace as Niederlosheim but I don't know if these two are related or not. There were also alot a notes about Nic and Eva or Nic alone visiting relatives in Rollingstone. I also have notes of Nic visiting relatives in Dubuque after Eva's death. Who?

I have the Greiner history back to 1784 but am really stuck (for 20+ years) on Eva. The 1900 Census of Rock Valley, Iowa lists her as Ava Griner but she had a VERY HEAVY German accent and may have been misunderstood. Ditto when she married as the original record at the Cathedral in Dubuque has John Greiner and Eva Redl. I have searched on Redl and found nothing so must be a mistake. I have been to Dubuque three times to search and to Rock Valley twice. Nic and Mary are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Rock Valley. Their son Frances (Frank) died in California and Henry Joseph died 9-20-1966 in Minneapolis but is buried in Rollingstone. I "struck it rich" when I researched the Henningfelds as a man answering an inquiry on a message board had their history back to 1170 but didn't know about them after 1890 so we exchanged and it worked out wonderfully! If only I were so lucky with Eva!

Now to add to the mystery: Barbara Greiner was born 1-24-1875 in Dubuque and died 5-10-1877 there; her Godparents - John Meyers/Barbara Palen. A Meyers girl was the maid-of-honor in Margaret Rader/Henry Greiner's marriage in Rollingstone.

Nic Greiner was born 2-9-1879 or 80; his Godparents were Nicholas Mettel/Magdalena Winter. Nicholas Mettle was born 2-27-1828 in Rhine, Prussia. Imm 1854 and to Dubuque in 1856. He married a Mary Greiner in 1851 (she died in 1856); his second wife was a Margaret Greiner in 1856 (census has Margaretta) Sisters?. She imm to US 55 years prior.        They had 7 children. Nicholas Mettel had a brother John born ? Rhine Province,Germany who married Susanna ? of Luxembourgh. They had 10 children - 2 born in Prussia, remainder in Iowa. Nicholas/John's father's name was Peter.

Magdaline Greiner was born 5-18-1822 in Luxembourg and married Nicholas Winter (born in Hussen) 8-17-1858. She had lived in Dubuque 65 years at time of her death. They had six children.

Barbara Foreman, born 1-2-1839 in Baschleden, Lux. married Nicholas Palen 2-22-1858. They had 7 children. Barbara died 3-6-1910; Nicholas died 11-12-1902. (I listed an inquiry at another website and was contacted by a woman whose grandmother was Barbara Palen!)

I have search all of Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.com, OneGreatFamily.com, USGenWeb.com, Newspaperarchives.com, and any other site I could find - both here and in Germany - for the following names: Roeder, Rader, Roder, Greiner, Griner, Kohl, Koll and Kuhl. The above is all I found. I even just did a search on these sites for the last names (and their various spellings) and just read through all the hits. There seems to be little info on Sioux Falls SD and their SDGenWeb page gives me errors every time I click on a link. Ditto for most of the South Dakota and German links from Cyndi's List. Frustrating!!

(Sorry this got so lengthy but you asked!!!! Besides, I don't want you to duplicate efforts!) As I live on a VERY limited income of social security diability, please advise of any costs associated with this search BEFORE they are incurred.
