MORE OF THE MURDER Of Thomas Todd, By His Brother-in-law, Warren.

SAID TODD ABUSED HIS WIFE

Her Condition is Now Said To Be Critical

Lake City, Nov. 25- Thomas Todd, who died yesterday from the effects of the knife wound inflicted by his brother-il-law, George Warren, during a drunken quarrel, will be buried Sunday at the Hewitt Cemetery, three miles north of Lovington. Funeral services will be held at Sunday at 11:00 am at the residence.
Mr. Todd was about 40 years of age and was survived by a wife and five children.
(paraphrase... an inquest was held... George Warren was held without bail for the Grand Jury)
One witness, Fulton Dixon, told the story of the night as follows:
In company with Todd, Warren, and Gus Johnson he went coon hunting the night the stabbing affray occurred. On their way home about 10 o'clock at night they stopped in Lovington. After visiting a couple of saloons they proceeded on the way home. About a half mile out of Lovington Todd and Warren began quarrelling. After proceeding for some distance, Johnson got out of the buggy to call his wife, whom he had left at a neighbor's house while he went hunting. Dixon, Todd, and Warren started on to Todd's home, but they had proceeded but a short distance when Todd and Warren resumed their quarrelling. The witness was driving when Warren and Todd suggested they return to Lovington the witness turned the horse around and drove back to the place where Johnson got out of the buggy. Johnson had not gone into the house and and Todd or Warren called for him to come back to the road. Both Todd and Warren wanted Johnson to accompany the party back to Lovington, but instead Johnson took hold of the horses, turned them around, and told them to go on home. The witness said when Johnson was turning around, Warren and Todd began fighting with their fists. The witness got frightened and climbed over the windshield of the buggy. Then Todd and Warren got out of the buggy, one on one side, the other on the opposite side. After alighting they both walked to the back of the buggy to meet each other. Dixon said after the two men got out of the buggy he saw Warren with a knife. Dixon drove the team into the lot where Johnson had gone to get his wife. Presently Todd came and got back in the buggy. Warren did not come back. He struck out to the cornfield toward Todd's home. Witness said that he didn't see the stabbing but that it must have occurred after the two men got out of the buggy.

WARREN NERVOUS

When the news of the death of Todd was communicated to Warren, he became very nervous and said the act was done in self-defense.
He claimed that he has not been so bad a man as is now rumored.
)paraphrased) they were sitting in the carriage...Todd began to abuse him...Todd talked disparingly of him and his sister (Todd's wife)...Todd started hitting him, hitting him over the head with his fists...After the two men got out of the carriage Warren tried to get Todd to stop beating him and stabbed him in the stomach...He thought Todd was going to kill him...he stabbed Todd in fear for his own life...
Warren often had trouble with Todd because of the way Todd treated his wife...Warren threatened to kill Todd and that he made the knife a few days after this threat...The men (all 4) were too drunk to know the particulars, no definite statement will ever be known...Todd was questioned about the affair last Tuesday but he didn't remember any of it, but threatened to get revenge with Warren...Warren didn't have any friends but had a bro-in-law in Ilioapolis...Todd had $20 in his pocket when he left home and had but $.20 when he came home.

[NOTE: In a truly bizarre coincidence, my own great-great uncles Willam and Rodney Bailey were on the coronor's inquest jury. They lived near Lovington. I believe that my family and your family knew each other.]

Because it took a few days for him to die, my guess is that he died either from peritonitis or sepsis.

Henry Todd, who has been working in the harvest fields of the Northwest, has returned home.

I'm not done, I'll look more in the next few days.
