Black Bear, Eagle Eye and Red Nest - Oglala Sioux
Looking for descendants of Black Bear whose family lived at Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota after being captured running towards Canada in the 1870's, in an effort to prevent being trapped on a Reservation.
Black Bear's wife was mostly listed as "Cow Goes First" in the Indian Census Rolls, and had remarried "White Blanket" about 1879, before census enumeration started in 1886. According to our research, she had around 8 children who survived to 1900, long after the massacre at Wounded Knee.We are not sure whether any of our family met their demise on that horrible, fateful day in 1890.
Most of Black Bear's sons were using Black Bear as a surname by the 1900s, but two branches of the family used Red Nest and Eagle Eye as their surnames.Some relatives also used Spotted Eagle as a surname, but we do not yet know which side of the family they are on.
