I have some information that another Seagraves cousin has kindly shared with me regarding the origin of our family line, and our ancestor Francis Segrave. According to "The Reverend William Segraves and His Descendants" by Savannah Segraves Day, "The Segraves Family 1066 to 1935" by Charles W. Segrave, and "Ireland and the Celtic Church" by Professor D.D. Stokes:
(I am going to paraphrase a bit) The name was probably originally Zeegraf, meaning Lord of the Sea in Old German. The Seagraves are descended from a colony of Danes who settled around Dublin in very early times, were routed by Brian Boru in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, and rejoined their cousins in Leicestershire, which had been a Danish stronghold for centuries. The oldest written record known to include the name Segrave is the Domesday Book (1080), noting Thomas de Segrave as part owner of Segrave in Leicestershire and owing an annual fine to William the Conqueror. The 1st Baron (from Burke's Peerage) Seagrave was Nicholas de Segrave, 1238-1295, was the father of Sir Peter de Segrave, Knight, the progenitor of the Irish branch, which is the branch Francis, our first American, is descended from. Sir Peter's grandson Patrick married into the Wafre family and added the village of Killeglan with the castle Dunslough in County Meath to his possessions in Ireland. His grandson split his lands between the firstborn of each of his two wives, creating two branches of the Segraves in Ireland, the Killeglan branch and the Cabragh branch, Finglas, Dublin. We are the Killeglan branch. Cromwell defeated the Norman-Irish and we lost Killeglan (now called Ashbourne) in 1649, but the Cabragh branch regained their lands in the Restoration. Francis was born in Ireland in 1654. I have not yet been able to locate more specific information about his direct parentage, since the records were destroyed in the Irish Rebellion in 1922, I believe. If anyone finds that this information is somehow in error, please let me know. So far I'm finding nothing but confirmation, but as I said, I'm still lacking the direct link to Francis. Cheers!
