I have since been able to find out she was actually born as Merah Eleanor Basten in Croydon. She married a Mr Thomas Stephen Vane and had 2 children - Gwendoline in 1879 and Fabian in 1881. Gwendoline and Fabian Vane can be found on the census return where Herbert & Eleanors are mistranscribed as "Scatter". I didnt think the Vane children had anything to do with them but obviously not!

I have also now found out that Merah, as well as changing her name from Basten to Sebastian seems to have knocked 10 years off her age between Mr Vane and Mr Scotter. On available census returns Merah and Thomas Stephen did not live together and he was with his aunt and sister!

Am wondering if I have a divorcee or a bigamist ?? (suspicious due to the name change and knocking 10 years off her age)
