Both the surnames, Zimmerman and Secord, are familiar; but I can hardly claim any competence in delineating the families. For example, my several times great uncle, Jacob Flewelling, m. Sarah Secord, and children of his brother, John Flewelling, married Zimmerman's. Both families, even in the late 1770's, were fair-sized and require more attention than I can give them. The Secord's, for example, had Loyalist branches in both New Brunswick and Upper Canada. It would be necessary to determine which part of the family to which David Secord belonged. I did note, at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/brant98.htm the marriage: 003086-98 ( Brant Co) Edward Langford EVERETT , 32, farmer , Kent Co., Thamesville , s/o William LANGFORD & Matilda LANGFORD , married Atthea SECORD , 24, New Durham , same, d/o David SECORD & Sarah ZIMMERMAN , witn: Alfred SECORD of New Durham & Marguerite A. KENNEDY of Birr Ont.,4 Sept 1898 at New Durham suggesting Marguerite A. Kennedy was Alfred's eventual bride. 'Atthea' I suspect to be Althea. Similarly there is: 003748-01 ( Brant Co) Joseph Wm. Campbell GILLESPIE , 27, clerk, Brantford, Chicago, s/o Joseph Gillespie & Gorganna TATE , married Maggie Victoria SECORD, 30, New Durham, same, d/o David SECORD & Sarah ZIMMERMAN, witn: Robert WALLACE & Mabel SECORD both of New Durham, 3 Aug 1901 at New Durham at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/brant01.htm suggesting the relevant events were fairly recent as these things go. According to the 1881 census of Burford Township, Brant County South, Ontario, David was b. ONT ca. 1825, and was a farmer. Sarah was b. ca. 1836; and children were: James (ca. 1861), Sarah (ca. 1863), Cora (ca. 1865), Albert (ca. 1868), Alfred (ca. 1868), Maggie (ca. 1870), Jam..? (male?, ca. 1872; seems to be the Althea/Atthea above), Elsie (ca. 1874), Phillip (ca. 1875?), 'Mable' (ca. 1876) and Ethelbert (ca. 1878.) Burford Twp., by 1901, appears to have become a part of Oxford Co. South, ONT. At that time, David is given as b. 15MAY1826 (but birth-dates in the 1901 census were often out by a year), and Sarah was b. 12MAR1837. A daughter, Mabel, was b. 29FEB1876. (since 29FEB was necessarily a leap year, and 1876 was such a year, these dates may be reliable.) 'Next-door' was Solomon Secord b. 8FEB1838; possibly a brother. The location does suggest they were connected to Solomon Secord (b. ONT ca. 1803) and his wife, Sarah (b. ONT ca. 1806), living with Alexander Secord (ca. 1832) and family in Burford Twp. This would appear to be Solomon Secord (18JAN1803-19FEB1890), s/o Elijah David Thomas (?) and Catherine (Smith) Secord; who m. (1st?) 22JUN1825 Mary Belcher (10OCT1807-12OCT1881), (and m. 2nd? 17FEB1852 Ann Hearn, but this seems unlikely.) Certainly this latter couple had a son, Solomon, b. ca. 1837. At this point, the family does not appear to have been well-researched. I would think, however, that at least a search of the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census returns of Burford Twp. would be revealing. Albert Solomon Secord is given as b. New Durham, Brant Co., ONT 8FEB1868 and d. 26JUN1943; but his parents are not given. Separately, he is given as b. 8FEB1868 and d. Douglas Co., Minnesota 12NOV1956 and to have m. Frances Dobie. Here his parents are David and Sarah (Zimmerman) Secord; and David is given as b. 15MAY1826, d. 29MAR1904 and m. 30APR1855 Sarah Zimmerman (12MAR1835-21NOV1922), d/o Allen and Elizabeth (Huntsman) Zimmerman. Sarah is given as b. Germany, but I would question that. David is given as the s/o Solomon and Mary (Belcher) Secord; where Solomon was the s/o David and Catherine (Smith) Secord. This appears to be a likely line-of-descent; but (as where Albert is given two, separate dates-of-death) the statements need verification. It is probable that, if Albert's date-of-death could be verified, a death certificate should exists, giving his parents' names. Thomas Notify Administrator about this message?
