Emma Seid Life Long Carlisle
Pioneer dies here at age of 92 (1861-1953)
On Wednesday, July 29, death came to Mrs. Emma Seid, the oldest citizen to have lived her entire life in the Carlisle community.
Mrs. Sied was born, August 6, 1861, the daughter of Phelps and Sally Reid, a pioneer family who came to Iowa in 1856, settling about a mile, northeast of Carlisle. Mrs. Seid was almost 92 years of age at the time of her death.
Emma Reed, was married December 23, 1880 to to John J. Seid, who was born in Maryland, and came to the Avon community, in 1855. Mr. and Mrs. Seid, made their home on their farm, northeast of town, until 1909, when they moved into Carlisle.Mr. Seid died in 1940.
Mrs. Seid had been a member of the Carlisle Christian Church more than 70 years, and made a home for many of the early ministers who were students at Drake University
On April 29,1940, she suffered a stroke and was confined to her bed the remainder of her life, but her mind remained alert and she enjoyed visiting with her friends, neighbors. Her condition became serious June 12th, and the last few weeks she suffered much pain. She is survived by her daughter. Mrs. Blanche Lanning and her and her grandson Ewing W. Lanning.
Funeral services were held at the Richardson Funeral home, Friday afternoon, July 31, conducted by Rev.Wm J. Lockhart, of Des Moines an old family friend, and he was assisted by Rev. Wm Hughes, pastor of the Carlisle Christian Church. Interment was made in the Carlisle cemetery.
Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral were Mr. & Mrs. Thurman Bender, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Sheriff, of Indianaola, Mr. & Mrs. L. J. Sheriff of Greenfield, Harry Seid, Mrs. Minnie Keeney, Mr. & Mrs. Richard Rothfus, Mrs. Bertha Rothfus, and Mrs. Lydia Ledlie, all of Des Moines, Mr. & Mrs. H. J. Sheriff of Orient, Mr. & Mrs. L. M. Lanning, of Madrid and Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Person, of New Virginia.
