Hi Ray,
Wow, your story sounds like mine. My dad was killed in WWII also 1 Dec 1943. Mom remarried and I knew nothing about my father. I finally about 10 years ago decided to find out more. I sent for his war record from WWII. I received thick packet from the AF(he was Army Air). I even have his autopsy record, that was very hard reading. You can get his war record and find out a lot. Then get his birth certificate from NY, you will have to pay for that tho. It was really hard when I first got the WWII records. I greived for him finally after all those years. I was in tears many times. When you find him it is worth it. God bless you and let me know what happens.
Call the Dept of Veterans Affairs (800-827-1000) they can get you his service number and how to get the rest. There is also a web site for us who lost parents then is is called AWON.American was orphans network. I got the phone numbers and addresses I needed to pursue this search and found a lot of comfort in others stories like mine.
