I have been researching Chesterfield County families for almost 40 years. Itís a tough county because most of itís records prior to 1865 were destroyed during the War (Burned).
The Chesterfield County Genealogical Society is only open on Saturdays from 9AM till 3 PM

Records are very limited. You might want to consider adding the SC Archives in Columbia, SC onto your itinerary.

I have a Mary A. Gulledge born abt 1825.
Here is some notes from my files
Obadiah Gulledge, daughter Mary A

My wife's great grandaunt, Mary A. Gulledge, 1825/1894, married John M. Wilks (Wilkes) 1814/1893. We have hit a stone wall in determining the parents of Mary A. Gulledge but now learn that her father may have been an Obadiah Gulledge.
Any information will be appreciated.

Mary A. Gulledge was the daughter of Mary Gulledge, born 1785 in South Carolina, moved to Alabama with her 4 children: 1 - Caroline b. 1822; Mary A. born 1825 m. John Wilks; 3- William D., married Martha Brock & 4- John W. born in 1819. My grandmother was a daughter of John Thomas Gulledge and Lucinda Aurella Strength Gulledge. John Thomas is a son of William D. Gulledge. Will be glad to share other information if you E-mail me at Do not know about her father, but am interested in finding out if anyone out there can help me.

Obadiah Gulledge served in the War of 1812 and there is a lot of information in his pension file. I don't have the file and don't know if the Genealogical Society has a copy are not.

I do have all the cemetery surveys published in 1995.
