James Everett drowned when he was thrown into a water hole by some “big boys” and he never came up.These water holes were common near mines where water was pumped out of the deep shaft mine during the mining process. The boys said they just wanted to scare him—they didn’t mean to hurt him.The Selvey family believes that James got tangled up in some debris in the pond and couldn’t free himself.James’ mother, Margaretta, did not press charges saying, “This would not bring my son back so why inflict additional sorrow on the other families.”
