I am trying to find someone who is knowledgable about the seminole wars around 1855. I am trying to find out why an affluent man from New York, who died in 1855 in the area around Sarasota and Manatee counties would have been there in the first place. The man was Augustus L. Clarkson, a wealthy land owner from the NYC and later on St. Lawrence county, New York area. That area of Florida, I understand, was fairly hostile at that time and I can't imagine what anyone like Mr. Clarkson would have been doing there in the first place. I can only speculate he was there on some form of business, but with whom and what? and how would he have traveled there from New York?
Anyone with any connections or information on where I might go next, please holler. I am trying to fill in some genealogy blanks on this line of Clarkson's. Thank you,
RDELONGY
