april 17, 1833, on tues. morning the 9th. a coloured man was drowned in the river schuylkill, at this borough, in attempting to prevent a large lumber boat from lodging on or going over the dam. while searching for this body, the body of benjamin zearfoss, of this boro, age abt. 75, was accidently found. mr. zearfoss had been confined to the house the greater part of the winter with dropsy, but on monday, the weather being fine, he took a walk out, and it is supposed in approaching too near the banks of the river, he accidently fell and was drowned. his relatives thought he had gone to visit a dau. a few miles out of the boro.
