Perhaps there is more here than first meets the eye, but I am at a loss as to how to prove it one way or the other...here goes.
In the Walsh County History, it indicates that Alfred came to Walsh County with his brother Henri in 1879. Now, I know that on the Sevigny side, almost every boy had a Joseph in their name, so perhaps Henri decided to go by that name? It further indicates that Alfred became the breadwinner of the family at age 12 (your Joseph/Henri would have been 1) and supported his mother and brother and six sisters: Liza, Philomina, Elmire, Delvina, Marie, and Emilia.
However, the County History further indicates that Henri married Sarah DeRosier Pellant on Jan 2, 1890 and then left after 1892 with his wife and two daughters. It does not say where he went. Since the marriage date for your Joseph is 1895, it is possible that he was widowed and started over again. Unfortunately, I don't know where I would begin to figure out if there is anything factual to this. Let's keep working on it...
Let me know if something sticks out at you!
