my gg grandmother married in Kent, England in 1836 as Eliza Sewell Flitt. She spoke French and married a shipwright who sailed the 7 seas - so she could have come from anywhere.
His family, Courtoy, lived in Middlesex London but his grandfather, a Frenchman, had a great many shares in the East India Company.
Do you have any idea which family Eliza may have come from?
I am estimating that she was born about 1810-1820 - she named her children William, Agnes Mary Ann, Louisa, Emily Gertrude, Sarah Jane, Eliza and Ann.
I have absolutely no other information on Eliza who died aged 35 in Port Adelaide, South Australia but I would dearly love to find her background.
