Shackles of Jasper County, Illinois
My grandmother was a Shackles. The name was derived from Shaklee and through the many generations and constant mis-spellings ended up on census, land and marriage documents as Shaklee, Shacklee, Shackley, Scheckley, Shakles, Shackler and many other mis-spellings.
Peter Shaklee, Sr. was born October 7, 1758 in Kildare County, Ireland.Peter married first a Miss Doyle circa 1783 of which he had a son and two daughters. The son was Francis Shaklee.I am of this lineage.
Peter Shaklee, Sr. married a second time to Barbara Ann Linn.Barbara was born about 1765 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. She is reported to have been the daughter of Solomon and Diadama Linn.Peter and Barbara had thirteen children:1. Soloman, 2. Dennis?, 3. Diadama, 4. William Hardy, 5. Catherine, 6. Barbara, 7. Timothy, 8. Peter, Jr., 9. Ann, 10. Elizabeth, 11. Cornice, 12. Emily, and 13. Hannah Linn.[Much info is available on-line about the William Hardy, Peter and Hannah Linn Shaklee lines if one is open-minded about the spelling of the last names.]
Peter is listed in the 1790 Bedford County, Pennsylvania Census as Peter Shekly and also in the 1800 Census for Somerset Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania as Peter Shoakley.
Peter Shakle is also listed as having attended the Estate Sale of Robert Caldwell in 1804 in Stubane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
Peter appears as Peter Shooklee in the 1830 Census for Manchester Township, Morgan County, Ohio.
Peter Shaklee died on March 19, 1834 in Morgan County, Ohio. His second wife, Barbara Ann (Linn) Shaklee, died May 5, 1844 also in Morgan County, Ohio.
The descendants of Peter, Sr. & UFN Doyle's son Francis Shaklee:
Francis Shaklee was born about 1784 in presumably in Bedford County, Pa.He was married twice. His first spouse is unknown and so are the names of their children. There were 3 sons and 3 daughters of this union. He married a second time about 1821 to Sarah Sparks presumably in Washington County, Pa.Sarah Sparks was born in Maryland about 1798.They had the following children:1. UFN Shackles (F), b. abt 1821; 2. James Shaklee (my line), b. abt. 1822 in Peters Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania; 3. Margaret Shaklee, b. abt. 1824 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio; 4. UFN Shaklee (F), b. abt. 1826; and 5. Francis M. Shaklee who was born on March 29, 1829 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio.
Francis Shaklee is listed in the following census reports and tax lists:
1810 Census for Peters Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania (listed as Francis Shackly).
1820 Census for Peters Township, Washington County Pennsylvania (liseds Francis Shakle).
1826 Tax List for Greene Township, Wayne County, Ohio (listed as Francis Shekler).[NOTE:Circa 1823, he, Sarah and family moved to Ohio and settled in Wayne County. They were among the early settlers of Greene Township, Wayne County, Ohio.]
1830 Census for Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio (listed Francis Shackler).
Francis reportedly died on March 19, 1832 near Medina County, Ohio per the Ohio Star which listed him as Francis Sheckly. His wife, Sarah Sparks, died circa 1882-83 in Jasper County, Illinois.[Sarah had moved to Jasper County circa 1850.She lived with her daughter Margaret and son-in-law Daniel Wiseman. Her sons, James Shaklee and Francis M. Shaklee also made this move.James would marry Diana Kibler, daughter of Theobald Kibler and Susannah Painter; and Francis would marry Matilda Bailey, daughter of Ludwell Washington Bailey and Margaret Sarah Sheely.]
James Shaklee and Diana Kibler are my gg-grandparents.They were married in Jasper County, Illinois on April 15, 1858.It is assumed that James had been married previously as the census reports includes four children that could not have been Diana's.Their known (combined) children were:1. Francis M. Shaklee b. 1851; 2. Marie Shaklee b. abt 1853; 3. Malissa A. Shaklee also b. 1853 (Marie & Malissa may be same individual); 4. Adaline b. abt. 1856; 5. William Marion Shaklee b. July 20, 1861 in Granville, Jasper County, Illinois; and 6. Charles (V.?) Shaklee.

William Marion Shaklee was my g-grandfather.He married Susan Frances Walker, daughter of James Walker and Mary Jane Peters.[James Walker is reported to have been from Crawford County, Illinois but is also known that both he and Mary Jane resided in Willow Hill, Jasper County, Illinois at the time Susan Frances was born.]
Children of the union of William Marion Shackler (spelling on his death certificate) and Susan Frances Walker were:
1. Dora Frances Shackles; 2. Hiram Everett Shackles; 3. Henry Cleveland Shackles; 4. Armilda Shackles; 5. James Franklin Shackles; 6. Glennie Gertrude Shackles (my grandmother); 7. William Leonard Shackles; and 8. Paul Nobert Shackles.
Each of the above eight children grew up as Shackles children and thus, the transformation from the surname 'Shaklee' to 'Shackles' was completed by the time of this generation of Shaklee's.
Many of the children of Peter Shaklee, Sr. and Barbara Ann Linn also are found with the Shackles surname in Henderson County, Illinois (Peter, Jr.'s line) and in Missouri (William Hardy Shaklee's line).
Though I am specifically seeking information on any of the James/Diana > William Marion/Susan Frances Shaklee/Shackles siblings and descendant lines, but I would appreciate any information that connects any or all of the family's noted above, regardless of the many various spellings.
Thus far it would appear that there are at least three strains of Shaklee name variations that came and settled in America. One strain settled in New England (Richard Shackley/Shockley) and were apparently from England; another (Peter Sr.'s) settled in Pennsylvania and were of Irish descent; the third appears to have originated in Denmark, Holland or Germany and came to America via England.Names such as Frederick Schakel would be included in this group which probably can be found among the early Palestine families up and down the mid-atlantic coastline.
Perhaps if enough of us distant cousins pool our resources we can together attempt to clarify the Shaklee surname's heritage in America.
