Hi Norm,

Thanks for taking a moment to reply. Hopefully we can connect.

According to their marriage certificate, John's father's name was James Shackleton and Betty's father's name was John Smith. I don't have mothers' names just yet, but am working on it (without much success, I'm afraid).

One interesting note, however, is that in 1900 Betty notes on the census that she is mother of 5 children, only 2 surviving. Their son, Joseph, is living with them, both in 1880 and 1900 in Oswego Falls. Joseph b. Sept 1856, according to the census in 1900.

Though my John and your Joseph aren't brothers, there may be a connection. My grandmother remembers having gone to stay a while with a member of my grandfather's family in New York sometime in the thirties or forties. All of John and Betty's descendants were in the Philadelphia area by that time, so it's quite possible that your Joseph's family may be who they went to see.

Unfortunately, my grandmother is 87, and her memory does not serve well on this subject, so she cannot remember the names of the family they stayed with. Perhaps someone in your family recalls such an incident?

Look forward to hearing from you,

Lou
