Hello Graham,

I'm hoping that perhaps we are related. I have traced my line back thus:

James Shackleton (labourer)
John Shackleton (weaver) b. abt. 1830 of Denholme m. Betty Smith (weaver) b. abt 1830 of Denholme, daughter of John Smith (labourer) John and Betty's marriage took place at the parish church of Bradford on 16 December 1848? (the handwriting is a bit hard to read for the last number of the date)

John and Betty had at least two children, Jonas Shackleton, b. 5 Oct 1850 Denholme m. Hannah Pricilla Bancroft b. 1848 Bradford. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas Bancroft b. abt. 1811 Halifax and Pricilla Sutcliffe b. 1811 Halifax. Jonas was my gg grandfather. John and Betty's other son, Joseph, b. abt 1856 presumably also in the Bradford area lived with John and Betty until their deaths. He then moved in with his brother Jonas until Joseph died.

Jonas and Hannah had the following children:
Harold b. abt 1874 England d. 1920
Ernest b. abt 1876 England d. 1915
Ethel b. abt 1878 England d. 1951
John B. b. abt 1879 England d. unknown
Lily Bancroft Shackleton b. abt 1881 Fulton, NY USA d. 1970
Daisy b. abt 1885 Fulton, NY USA d. unknown
Thomas Bancroft Shackleton b. abt 1887 Fulton, NY USA d. 1963 Thomas was my g grandfather.

Thomas married Mary E. Hummell b. 11 Mar 1887 in PA USA d. 1973.

Thomas and Mary had the following children:
Louis (my grandfather)
Thomas Bancroft Jr.
Herbert S.
Laura Ida
Edward Owen (killed in action over the Mediterranian as a belly gunner in a B-17 bomber during WWII)

At the Hebden Bridge Local History Society , they have a box of papers belonging to William Shackleton of the area from the late 18th and early 19th century.

One set of papers in particular interests me and probably you as well. They are catalogued as "SHACK/MS10 Miscellaneous bills, notes, receipts of William Shackleton 1750-1800 (18 items)" "Item number 15. Full account of Mr Sutcliffe's charges for the conveying of Clough Head Farm. mentions Thos. Bancroft (the lettee) and John Shackleton (the buyer)" is one piece I really need to see, given the names involved.

These papers may provide a link to William Shackleton, the schoolmaster, for both of us. Unfortunately, driving my car down to Hebden Bridge from Philadelphia involves sharks and I'm afraid of sharks. :)

They hold many other papers of his, many of which may be useful to us both.

If you happen to be in the area with a bit of time on your hands, I would be happy to pay for your troubles. I hope that we might both benefit, and find ourselves to be cousins.
