RE SHANE family of Berks Co, PA *see Mildred Clark 2/22/09
To all SHANE *SCHON/*SCHOEN/*SHAIN researchers in PA-
I have been working with a young man named Andy Schön (he legally changed his surname from Shane) from NY on my "Shane" family, and it is turning out to be like a dog chasing its tail. The family surname appears to have become the Germanic spelling Schön, and in America it stayed that way until the late 1700s or early 1800s. Thankfully, I do have a friend who lives in Munich helping me with the Shane surname in and around Berlin in the 1700s.
Andy's research was completed in 2009, although he did not pursue the European origin, and he now shares it on his web-site. He is descended from (G1) Johann Peter Schön 1731-1799, his first generation in America.
I am still trying to establish if he and I are also related, but regardless please visit his site--

My research begins with (G7)Michael "Shane" (probably variant of MacShane) born c 1673 in Northen Ireland. According to a descendant's bible c1850, Michael emigrated to Berlin when he was about 22-years old. He married a German girl named "Mary" Dedric (many German variants).
The anscestor who wrote in the bible appears to have had a noticable Pennsylvania-German dialect, and he/she also omits vowels, but it's safe to say that Dedric could be any spelling variant of this surname in Germany.
Michael and Mary (Dedric) Shane had 3 sons and 1 daughter. Two sons immigrated to America in the 1700s; (G6)Thomas came first, and he is my (G6) grandfather. The other son came about 10-years later and may be Peter. There is a Johan Peter Schön on the Ship Willam in the 1740s.
The "Thomas Shane" I found on the Ship Queen Elizabeth had his surname spelled three different ways. Note: Thomas couldn't write-
(1) List A (Captain's List) Thomas Shane
(2) List B (Palatines on the same ship & signers of the Oath) Johan Thomas(X)Shene
(3) List C (signers of the Oath of Abjuration)Johan Thomas(X)Schön
See what I mean?
I am zeroing in on Thomas's whereabouts when he arrived here in America. I have found land records for these two brothers in Philadelphia County and Berks County. I know it may be futile to find anything about my Irish and German roots, but it would be "icing on the cake" to know about the family's European origin.
I have been pursuing the Palatinite theory, although this region was further south of Berlin. With the events taking place in Germany during the 1700s it is very possible these families fled to the Palatinites area. Just a hunch~
My lineage continues from Thomas's son (G5)Jacob who was a millwright and settled in Lycoming County shortly after it was established c1797? Jacob m. Susanna(h) Swartz of Bucks County; daughter of Michael and Sophia Swartz (Plumstead Twp, Bucks Co). They had 8 children, and lived in the Muncy Creek Twp area. I have the info on their children's lines, too.
I am excited to have found some possible connections here on genforum---I welcome any collaboration!
