Ray, if you are still checking out this site, I would love to work on this with you. Abner Padgett was Phoebe's brother. I believe her father was Edmund Padgett who was the head of the household in Amherst Co according to the 1785 tithe listing. James who went to KY was thought to be a brother of Jesse who married Elinor Wade, daughter of John and Elizabeth Wade. The James who married Phoebe Padgett and went to Ross Ohio is the one who is guardian of Patsy (Martha) who appears to be the daughter of a Polly Shasteen and her deceased husband. One of these James is probably the son of James Sr. and wife Elizabeth who I find in 1749 Albemarle records, Renne, Nathaniel, and an Anne Chastain also show up in those early records.
In 1812 James Sharstead Jr. (the clerk really murdered this name) and wife Phoebe sold their 100 acres on Otter Creek in Amherst to Jonathan and Richard Ellis. That indicates that there was a James Sr. living in the county. There is also, at this time, a William Shasted listed as a witness to a deed in Amherst Co. Although it appears to me that James Jr. and Phoebe probably moved to Rockbridge Co in 1812, on their way to Ohio, there is still a James Shasteen on Otter Creek in 1822, per a deed that refers to James land adjoining the land of Isaac Tinsley deceased.
