Hello, my name is Keith Shasteen. I am from Hamilton County IL. I have a good deal of information due to the fact that our branch of Shasteen's have been in Hamilton County for over 170 years. Chester Shasteen died on March 31, 1865 off of the coast of South Carolina, (Atlantic Ocean). He was on the "General Lyon". He was in the civil war on the north, (Union)side. Chester died after the war had ended. He enlisted in the millitary in 1862 or 1863 in Shawneetown IL. Chester married and had 5 children. Chester in 1840 was listed in the census at ten years old as a farm laborer. There were seven of them in 1830 and in 1840 there were two left. Both were kids, 10 and 7 years old. Chester's father was probably Jesse Shasteen who was recorded in the census of 1830 in Saline District IL. Most of the decendents of Chester and Jesse are buried in various cemetaries here in Southern Illinois. I do have some more informaion unfortunately not enough time. We can e-mail. E-mail me so we can exchange informaion! I will be glad to share all I can!
