Marti,
These are some things I have noted that may be of help.

TRAVIS GENEALOGY

1812 Voter Tax List Franklin Co., TN lists only three Travises: John, Robert, and William. James S. Cole not listed.

1820 and 1830 Census Franklin Co., TN lists no John or William Travis. They either died or moved away from Franklin Co., TN.

1820 and 1830 Census Franklin Co., TN lists only one Travis: Robert. He was born ca.1775-1794, his wife was born ca. 1775-1794, one son was born ca. 1804-1810, three sons were born ca. 1810-1820, three daughters were born ca. 1810-1820, and one daughter was born ca. 1820-1825. Robert and his wife had eight children by 1830: four sons and four daughters. 1830 is the last time he is in a Franklin Co. census.

1820 Census Franklin Co., TN, 1830 Census Lincoln Co., TN, and 1840 Census Franklin Co., TN lists James Cole. He and his wife Mary "Polley" are buried in the Kitchens' Cemetery in Franklin Co. He was born 27 March 1795 in TN and died 18 April 1885 in Franklin Co. She was born 27 Dec 1791 in NC or SC and died 7 September 1871 in Franklin Co.

If the James Cole family in the1820 Census for Franklin Co., TN is evaluated, there are listed two males under 10 or born between 1811 and 1820. John Jackson and James Erwin Travis would both fit this time period since they were born in 1813/1814 and 1815 respectively. One female is listed under 10 or born between 1811 and 1820. Eleanor "Ellie" Travis would fit this time period since she was born in 1811. The final child listed is a female between 10 and 16 or born between 1804 and 1810. Sarah "Sallie" Travis would fit this time period since she was born ca. 1809.

1840 Census Franklin Co., TN lists only one Travis: John J. He is shown living only seven households from James Cole in the Parks River Hills District 6. Also in this district are James and William Shasteen, Jr. shown living next to each other. An evaluation of John J. Travis's household is most likely his brother James Erwin, John J.'s wife, James Erwin's wife, and John J.'s first two children (daughters). Another male in the same age category as John Jackson and James Erwin (born 1810-1820) is also in the household.

The Travis, Shasteen, and Cole families of Franklin Co., TN each have recorded oral history stating that Polley first married a Travis and had at least four children (and possibly eight): Sarah "Sallie" born ca. 1809, Eleanor "Ellie" born 25 February 1811, John Jackson "Jack" born ca. 1813/1814, and James Erwin born 17 January 1815. (Sallie and Ellie married brothers James and William Shasteen, Jr.) Mr. Travis either died or moved away and left his family. Polley then married James "Jimmy" S. Cole and had five (Rev. Hall's account says four) more children: Samuel Paschal born 17 January 1821, Joshua "Pink" born 6 May 1822, Mary "Polly" Ann born 10 July 1824, Rachel born 11 Oct 1827, and William "Billy" H. born 10 July 1832.

If the Cole children were Polley's, she could not have been married to Robert Travis (this is why family researchers believe her husband was John Travis). Her first child, Samuel Paschal Cole, was born in 1821. Robert Travis was still alive in the 1830 census. On the other hand, if her only child by James S. Cole was William "Billy" H. born in 1832, and since Robert Travis shows up for the last time in the 1830 census, then Robert could have been her first husband. There is a gap of five years between Rachel Cole born in 1827 and Billy Cole born in 1832. But who is the Robert Travis who entered 50 acres in the Mountain District, Franklin Co., TN on 13 March 1832?

However, oral history on the Cole family given by Rev. Robert Hall (1903-1993) relates that William "Billy" H. Cole was the youngest of twelve children all of the same mother. Eight were by her first husband, Travis was their name, and four by Billy Cole's father (James S. Cole). Three of the Cole children were boys and one was a girl. Billy was born when his mother (Polley) was 50 years old. The oldest of the Cole boys was Paschal, the second boy was named Pink, the girl was named Rachel, and the youngest boy was named William and called Billy. Rev. Hall was Billy Cole's grandson.

Oral history on the Shasteen family given in 1945 by William Barbee Shasteen (1873-1951), grandson of William and Ellie Travis Shasteen, relates that Ellie's mother married a Travis and had (in addition to Ellie) a son named Erwin and a son named Jack. Ellie's mother then married Jimmy Cole and had a son W.H. (Uncle Billy), who was a half-brother to Ellie Travis Shasteen. None of the brothers and sisters of Billy are mentioned as being Ellie's half-brothers and half-sisters. In the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Franklin Co., TN census, Ellie states she was born in TN. In the 1880 Franklin Co., TN census she states she was born in AL, her father was born in TN, and her mother was born in AL.

Researchers from the Travis and Cole families believe that Polley's maiden name was Kitchens.

History of the Travis family recorded on a piece of paper in Catherine Ione Travis Franklin's (1889-1961) family Bible and written in her handwriting, relates that her grandfather James Erwin Travis had a brother Jack, two sisters Sallie and Ellie who married Shasteens, and a half-brother Billy Cole. Billy Cole's brothers and sisters are not mentioned as being the Travis children's half-brothers and half sisters.

History of the Travis family recorded in 1955 by Eva Travis (ca. 1870s-1963) of Tullahoma, TN relates that her grandfather John Jackson "Jack" Travis, his brother Erwin, and his two sisters whose names she did not know, were the children of John Travis.

History of the Shasteen family recorded in 1925 by William Henry Phillips as it was given to him by Henry Tribble Shasteen, Sr. (1859-1943), grandson of James and Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Travis Shasteen, relates that Sallie's maiden name was Cole and she was first married to a Travis. It appears he meant Sallie's mother was first married to a Travis and Sallie was reared by her stepfather James Cole thus causing him to think her maiden name was Cole.

Information recorded in the funeral home record book for Jesse Larkin Shasteen, youngest child of James and Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Travis Shasteen, relates that Jesse Larkin's father was James Shasteen born in VA and his mother was Sallie Travis born in VA. Jesse Larkin Shasteen was born 20 March 1849 in Franklin Co., TN and died 18 June 1919 in Franklin Co., TN. His funeral record was found in the Funeral Register July 1917-August 1919 at Daves Culbertson Funeral Home in Tullahoma, TN. James and Sallie Travis Shasteen lived their last years with their son and daughter-in-law Jesse Larkin and Sarah Stafford Shasteen. In the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Franklin Co., TN census Sallie states she was born in TN and the birthplace for her father and mother are listed as unknown. In 1880 there is a niece Nancy Dixon living in James and Sallie Travis Shasteen's household. The Dixon connection has not been established.
