Hi Diana,

I don't think any of us working on the Shasteens can say for sure what country the family came from. Some folks think the name Shasteen is just a form of the name Chastian but so far I haven't been able to prove that. The two families were in VA at the same time. The Chastians were supposed to have come from France. I have followed the Shasteens from Rockbridge Co., VA through southern OH to Defiance Co., OH & over to Beaver Co., PA where my husbnd's part of the family settled. Do you know where your mother was born? If I can be of any help let me know. As you can see the Shasteens are scattered across the country. I do know that a Jesse who was in VA moved to KY. He had been on the tax records with the James whose family moved from VA to OH. I really don't know how Jesse & James were connected.
Ruth
