I worked my way through my Sheffer notes this weekend and did not turn up anything that would help.Since Alfred was about 8 years old at the time of the 1880 census, he should show up in the Soundex of the 1880 census for New York. This will identify his parents.
A transcription of the 1880 census is available on CD-ROM at a reasonable price from familysearch.org.I recently saw it at a library, but was unable to use it because some one else was using it.It may be the best genealogical research tool for this time period that is currently available.I have ordered my own copy.
Also the best source for vital records in this area of New York are church records.Arthur C. M. Kelly has published most of these over the last 30 or so years.Even though my ancestors lived in Germantown, not all of their births and marriages were recorded in churches there. You can find these at genealogical libraries. Our public gen library in Houston has them.
I visited Germantown several years ago looking for the graves of some of my ancestors.I could not find them. When I got home, I found a new Kelly book in the library that listed the gravestones for which I was looking.I had not found the right cemetery.Later I was in Germantown again and there were the stones.
