So happy that you wrote because this post was in error.William of Bulloch is not the brother of Martha Sheffield Allen. He is probable oldest son of William Sheffield of Duplin County. That William is likely brother to Martha Sheffield Allen.
There are no proofs for either of those statements.Logically though the older William of Duplin died in 1786, making him a good candidate for brother to John of Duplin who died in 1790.That William, John and Martha are all at ages to be brother and sister along with Isham who marred Barbara Boney. All of whom lived in Duplin, but had close ties with Northampton where their likely father William of Northampton lived.
William of Bulloch County is NOT the son of John of Duplin, that William is William Sheffield who married Rebecca Lee and they lived in Pulaski County with widow Elizabeth Grady Sheffield after John of Duplin's death. Many deeds and court dates substantiate this.
So since the family of William of Bulloch believe that this man has to be kin to the John Sheffield of Duplin family, the only one who was old enough to have been his father would have been William Sheffield of Duplin who was married to (likely second wife) Sarah. This William is well documented in Duplin with Sarah and their younger sons Amos and John who married the Brooks sisters.
Confusion in the William of Bulloch family thought that Amos was Austin Amos and that the younger John were also somehow kin.Well, the only way this William could be from the known Duplin family would be thorugh this William Sheffield as his older son. That son would have already been in Bulloch when the older William dies and leaves his land to his widow and two younger sons. There is no mention of an older son.But living in the household are two other women who we never find names for.So the mystery is were those older sisters unnamed, or a mother of Sarah? We just don't have those questions answered.
We don't find a will in Northampton for the probable father of these older fellows as well.We do find that the older Arthur and West wind up with their father's land in Northampton. But no mention of Ephraim and Delilah of Northampton who were probable brother and sister and no mention of John, Isham, Martha and William of Duplin, nor do we see them with that older William's land.
I think the older William staked his other sons to their land when they married. And so when he died his land in Northampton went to the unmarried sons. I also believe that is what happened in William of Duplin's case, he had already helped his older son and possible daughters and simply left the remainder of his estate to his then wife and two boys.
Is all of that conjecture true?I would certainly like to have more proofs.I don't think any are coming.I think that genealogists have uncovered all the raw data from those areas that is left and we will be left with surmise and conjecture. In any event, we must first go with what is absolutely known and that is that William of Bulloch is not the son of John of Duplin. Past that we really have no proofs for anything.
