I have started researching the Shehane family on behalf of my godfather Claude Shehane. His grandfather Yancey Shehane was born in 1898 in Pleasant Hill, Lancaster Co., SC to James Thomas Shehane (b 1865). To help me establish the Shehane family, I have gone through the enumeration districts for Pleasant Hill for 1860, 1870, and 1880. And while it hasn't helped me much yet, it might help you. There is a Frederick Shehane (age 38) with wife Mary present in 1860 with D F Shehane (age 32) with wife Mary and son Frederick a few houses away. Frederick's family included wife Mary (43), sons Frank (17), Robert (15), John (11), William (8), and daughters Sewell (6) and unnamed (1 mo.) He does not appear in 1870 or 1880. There is also a 35 yr old Phillip a few pages before Frederick. Perhaps the Phillip you have was named after an uncle.

Hope this helps!
