At Fold3.com, I found his confusing Civil War (Union) pension.
Apparently, John D M Shelton died 26 July 1865, shortly after being released from military service.
His mother Sarah L Shelton of Gilmer Co GA applied & received a mother’s pension. She stated that John D M Shelton’s father, Ephraim F/T Shelton was born 11 Apr 1809 & died 28 Dec 1863 in Cherokee Co NC. Application states that Ephraim Shelton married Sarah L Holloway in 1848 in Cherokee Co NC.
Sarah A Thompson Shelton also applied for a pension, claiming to be John D M Shelton’s widow. She claimed that they married in 1864 Fannin Co GA. This application was denied because there was no record of their marriage and there were witnesses that stated that John D M Shelton did NOT marry Sarah Thompson.
Meanwhile, in completely different family:
Sarah Alice Hodges married in 1861 Soddie, Hamilton Co TN, to James Danfort (or Denton?) Shelton. He was killed in action in 1864. She received a widow’s pension until she remarried in 1867 Hamilton Co TN to Samuel W Lowe. Samuel Lowe died in 1923, and Sarah Hodges-Shelton-Lowe applied for pension for the service of her two husbands.
Somehow, the pension board decided that Sarah Hodges-Shelton-Lowe (widow of James D Shelton) was Sarah Thompson-Shelton (supposed widow of John D M Shelton). A full investigation was launched as to why she claimed two different husbands.
The pension files for John D M Shelton, James Danfort Shelton & Samuel Lowe are all mixed together.
NOTE:John D M is listed with his parents in 1850 Cherokee Co NC as "Marquis" and is listed in 1860 Cherokee Co GA with his mother (stepmother?) Sarah Holloway Shelton as "Marquin" Shelton.
