I am searching for information on Ephraim Shelton who fathered 2 boys Melvin and Solomon (Sollie) Shelton in Shelton Laurel Community of Madison, North Carolina, by Rachel Norton born abt. 1863. Rachel married Pleasant Hall in 1887 and Melvin and Sollie were raised as his step-sons. Ancestry.com has Melvin and Sollie listed as born 1877 & 1879, but that is incorrect. They did not show-up on census records for Shelton Laurel, Madison County, North Carolina in 1880. Rachel however was listed as 16 years old on the 1880 census living with Pleasant Hall and his wife Catherine as a servant. The boys were not born at this time. Rachel's name had changed to Shelton from Norton. Rachel's parents were Jessee Norton and Elizabeth Shelton Norton of Madison, North Carolina. They moved to Greene County and Washington County, Tennessee in their older age. There's an Ephraim Shelton living a few houses down from Rachel married to a Rhoda Norton (Rachel's cousin). Ephraim and Rhoda have a one year old child in 1880. I can follow this Ephraim and Rhoda Shelton and they remain married having their own children for several years. I don't believe this to be the father of Melvin and Sollie. I believe the Ephraim I am searching for would have married Rachel prior to 1880, changing her name to Rachel Norton Shelton. I have heard people mention Melvin's biological father went by Effe, Little E, and Ephraim. If anyone has any information on this situation I would greatly appreciate the help.
