I am seeking information about my gr-gr-grandparents, John and Caroline (Oehler?) Sherer, who immigrated from the Baden area of Germany, probably through Hamburg, about 1854. John was born about 1820, and Caroline about 1830. I have not found ship's name or port of entry yet. They brought 2 sons with them: Charles, my gr-grandfather, born about 1850, and James, born about 1852, both in Germany. They first settled somewhere in Ohio, where they had 3 more children - Lizzie, born about 1856; John, born about 1858; and Frank, born about 1862. They moved to Missouri sometime between 1862 and 1868, settling in Worth County, near Grant City. They are all on the 1870 Worth County census, spelled as Shearer. There, the trail seems to stop! Charles ended up in Doniphan County, Kansas, as did his brother Frank, who started spelling his name as Shear; his descendents use that spelling to this day, although Charles always used Sherer. But John and Caroline seem to have disappeared - I cannot find records of their deaths, or their headstones. The same is true for James, Lizzie, John, and Lottie. John's brother may have been Michael Sherer, born about 1822 in Germany, who married Margarette Middlestetter, born about 1835, also in Germany. Michael immigrated in about 1850, and first lived somewhere in Ohio where he had 5 children, before coming to Worth County between 1863 and 1870. Michael's descendents still live in Worth County, Missouri, but are unaware of any connection between John and Michael. I feel that they are brothers, but cannot prove it. Caroline's brother may have been Charles Oehler, born about 1835, who is listed with them on the 1870 Worth County census. He served in the Civil War, and was a very influential man in Worth County. I have not been successful in contacting his descendents. If you have any information that seems to pertain to this, please e-mail me at: janice.evans@sjsd.k12.mo.us Thank you for your help!!!
