Gerald Edward SHERIDAN
SHERIDAN, Gerald EdwardOctober 15, 2011. Born November 9, 1924 in New York City. He was predeceased by his daughter, Marnie Sheridan, and his brothers Clement Sheridan and John Sheridan. Survived by his wife, Betty Sheridan, daughter Katherine Sheridan Crocker (Sam), Gerald E. "Buzz" Sheridan, Jr. (LexAnn); grandchildren, Elizabeth Crocker Thomas (JD), Clay Crocker, and Charlie Crocker; and three great-granddaughters, Katherine, Caroline, and Madeline Thomas. Gerry enlisted in the Navy in 1943. He served in World War II on a destroyer in the North Atlantic, then went to officer candidate school at Princeton University. He played on Princeton's varsity baseball and basketball teams, and was a member of Tiger Inn. He graduated from Princeton in 1947 with a degree in engineering, and remained an active Princeton alumnus for his whole life. In what he always called his best stroke of Irish luck, his first job after college sent him to Cookeville, TN, where he met his beloved wife, Betty, beginning a love affair and partnership of 62 years. They married in October of 1949 and he soon embraced being a Nashvillian with zeal. He had a prolific career as a builder and real estate developer. He was active in the community in many other ways, as a co-founder and first president of the Nashville City Club, a director on the board of Cumberland Heights, a member of the Exchange Club, the Amateur Chefs of Nashville, the One Hundred Club, and many others. He was a generous and devoted friend to so many, an adoring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, always ready with a powerful hug. He lived his life as an exciting adventure. He knew how to fly an airplane, traveled the world, struck up conversation with anyone, and was the person to call when friends or family needed something taken care of, right away. Those who knew him best celebrate a life lived with joy, exuberance and love. Friends are invited to visit with family at Belle Meade Country Club on Tuesday, October 18 from 3-5 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, at First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Road, with a visitation at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to The Harpeth Hall School, 3801 Hobbs Road, Nashville, TN 37215, Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson St., Nashville, TN 37203 or the charity of your choice.
