Paul,
Just wanted to make you aware that my great, great grandfather, Michael Sheridan, was the Gen's uncle.
This information comes from a family bible that Michael owned. Michael and John (the Gen's father) were brothers.
Unfortunatly, Michael did not leave behind any correspondence betwen him and John.
Michael lived in Stonington,CT but made frequent trips to Savannah,GA as he was to have had Sheridan family there. My great Uncle Charlie (would have been Phil's first cousin once removed) said Michael first lived in Savannah as a small child after coming over from Co. Cavan (app. 1830). I have a cassette of a conversation I had with him about the family on Uncle Charlie's 90th birthday.
Michael listed his children's births and deaths in the family bible. He and his wife, Julia (Bracken) Sheridan had 8 possibly 9 children. Some were born and died in Stonington some in Savannah. Three of the children and Julia are buried in Catholic Cemetery in Savannah, GA. Three lived to be adults, only one, my great grandmother, Annie Margaret Sheridan married (Edward Burns) and had children.
The list of children's births and death in Savannah lists a gap when the Civil War occured. Often wondered how the southern Savannah Sheridan's felt about Gen Phil's work in the Civil War.
Michael and Julia resumed traveling to the south when the war ended.
Have a letter from Michael's grandaughter, Julia Burns, talking about things her mother, Annie, told her about what it was like returning to the south after the war.
Very willing to share any (and all) of the info I have on my "branch" of the Sheridan family. Just let me know, Paul, what you need.
