Dear Gene,
No Polish joke intended, though the story strikes me as odd and, obviously to this Koloski, rather ironic.
I came across the Polish-flagged vessel tradition in Somerset, Ohio, PHS's hometown (if not birthplace).
The village is, as one might expect, a bit of a shrine to the general with no lack of Sheridan scholars.
An elderly lady associated with the local historical society endorsed the Flannigan family traditions about a saltwater nativity.
She however, stated that the vessel was flying a Polish flag versus a Union Jack.
As to PHS II, my readings indicate he died of natural causes and saw no action in World War I. At the time of his death, he was a staff officer or military aide to a ranking civilian or uniformed personage.
His son, Philip III, died prior to 1949.
Whether or not a Philip IV or a great-grandson of the general by some other name was ever conceived -- let alone survives -- I cannot say.
