Emily E. Shikle was born 25 October 1856 near Vinemont in Cullman County, Alabama, the daughter of Martin VanBuren Shikle (who died in Tennessee abt. 1864). She married (1) Phillip Ryan on June 12, 1895; (2) John M. Smith on 3 August 1897; and (3) William Joseph Owen on 18 November 1903. (When they married, Emily was age 47; and William was 70.) He died on 21 September 1922 in Vinemont, Alabama. He was a Confederate veteran (Company "I", 5th Alabama Cavalry) and drew a Confederate pension. After William J. Owen's death, his pension was stopped, and Emily applied in 1925 to have it reinstated to her as his widow. She testified that she had lived in Alabama all of her life (in Morgan and Cullman Counties), and that in 1925 she was living at her home in Vinemont; that she had no children of her own but had three living step-children; and that her sister-in-law Florence Shackles was living with her. L.J. Wilhite and J.W. Drake, also of Vinemont, swore an affadavit that they had known her for 20 years and considered her to be a truthful person. On a separate form (perhaps filled out at a different time), she testified that she was living in Vinemont with Mrs. Charley Crutchfield. Any further information about this family greatly appreciated!
