SHIPLEYS, 1700s VA>OH
I'm looking for evidence that Shipleys were in VA in the early 1800s. I have a John Shiplet b 1786 VA who married Mary Fierce. They came to SE Ohio to raise their family and some of the children spelled their name Shipley. Their children were; Ira b 1823, Levi b 1827, Isaac b 1831, Almeda b 1834, Elizabeth b 1836, and Nancy b 1839.
The Shiplet GenForum crowd believes that all the Shipleys were a derivative of Shiflet (French in origin) and that there was a lot of different spellings in VA from this name.
But the family says our ancesters were Welsh in origin. That's why they settled in SE OH to work the mines and iron industry.
I have found a Shipley ENG and lots of Shipleys already in the early census rolls. Does anyone have any Shipleys from Wales, VA or SE Ohio?
Thanks,
Bill Brinkley and Kay Shipley Brinkley
