Shipley – Riverboat Captain – Mid 1800’s – married to Elizabeth Varner

I’m looking for the first name of as well as ancestors and descendents of the Shipley who family oral history suggests was a riverboat captain (perhaps on the Mississippi). He married Elizabeth Varner (1837-1907, born in PA) and had 2 known children, Harriet Varner Shipley-Coudy (“Hattie” 1865-1938, my great grandmother) and Rachael A. Shipley-Towsend (b. 1856, married Thomas D. Towsend). Census records for his daughters conflict as to whether Mr. Shipley was born in Pennsylvania or Ohio. He may have passed away before the 1870 census as he’s not shown in any records then or after. His wife (widow) and children lived in St. Louis from 1870 on.
