Susan,
Martha "Patsey" (Shipley) Black is an older sister to my GG grandmother Rachel Shipley. The only info I have on Patsey's origin comes from a post on this forum (see post #1002) back in 2000 by George Cox who mentions he has a copy of the estate listing of Patsey's father, Benjamin Shipley (b. before 1775, d. abt 1826 in Wayne Co., KY).That estate lists the children of Benjamin and Sarah "Martha" (Cottrell) Shipley which includes Martha "Patsey" Shipley, married to John Black. That's how George Cox reported it.
The older children of Benjamin and Martha Shipley were apparently born somewhere in TN (e.g. daughters Elizabeth, m. DUNNEGAN; Lucinda, m. FLOYD; Anna, m. FLOYD), but Rachel was born in nearby Wayne Co., KY in about 1810 so the family moved from TN to KY about the time daughter "Patsey" was born.My tree shows her having been born in TN in 1808 but I don't have a reference shown for that tidbit.
It would be nice to have more solid documentation on the children of Benjamin and Martha (Cottrell) Shipley, but I don't think anyone has uncovered anything more than that estate which George Cox posted.
Hope this helps.
