In Notts and Derbyshire Notes and Queries, 1895, v.3, 14: A request for information on the Rickards family of Beeston, Notts, includes: 1710 George Rickards of Beeston gent. married Mary only daughter of Henry Shipton of Yoxall Staffs gent. Thus the Shiptons were gentry. There is a monument and a hatchment for the early nineteenth century Rickards, both of which show the arms of Rickards (Argent on a bend gules three garbs or) quartering a coat so far unidentified: Gules a chevron or between three wedges argent each charged with four trefoils slipped sable (Hatchments in Britain, v.8) Is it possible that these are the arms used by the Shiptons?
