The 1910 and 1920 censuses also say that James Shirkey (Sherkey in 1920 census)was born in Missouri. However, there are no James Shirkies (born ca 1861) in the 1880 or 1870 censuses who were born in Missouri. There is a James J. Shirkey in Arcadia (Morgan), Illinois (born ca 1860 in Iowa) in the 1880 census, and there is a James Shirkey in Houston (Adams), Illinois (born ca 1860 in Iowa) in the 1870 census. The reason I took a look at this family is because some Shirkeys born in Missouri were originally Chartiers from Quebec through Vincennes, Indiana. At this time, I do not believe James is descended from this Chartier family.
