Richard Shirley, died16 Jul 1780, w/Wm Phillips Rangers, Bedford Co., PA
Looking for descendants of Richard Shirley, died 16 Jul 1780, in an attack by Indians, while serving with William Phillips Rangers of Bedford Co., PA.
Richard Shirley had joined Capt. William Phillips Rangers in the summer of 1780, and in Mid July, the company of ten men set out to protect settlements against Indian incursions. The group came to grief when a larger group of indians, and some say, white men dressed as Indians surrounded the cabin in which the Phillips Rangers were having breakfast.A firefight insued and the Rangers were eventually over whelmed and surrendered. The only survivors were William Phillips and his son Elijah, who were held prisoners until the end of the Rev. War.
I have an ancestor, Delilia (Phillips) (Shirley) Walker, daughter of Capt. William Phillips. She is said to have been married to a man named Shirley, who I believe may have been a son or grandson of Richard Shirley mentioned above.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
