Greetings from a Shober research "Newbie",

I am researching the ancestry of my sister-in-law. In her family effects there exists a letter from William B. SHOBER, who was "a professor at an eastern college", addressed to Florence SURBAUGH, whom he calls his second cousin.

Florence SURBAUGH was the daughter of George. W. SURBAUGH born about 1821 in Virginia, and Irena Nosler. George W. and Irena Nosler named a son JOHN SHOBER SURBAUGH.

The letter from William B. SHOBER, paraphrased by someone conveying the information from the letter, but not the exact text, to me, says:

Suzanna Elizabeth SHOBER SURBAUGH, born 1797, died 1835, at age 38 had 6 kids. Married 1817 and was married for 18 years. Her unknown SURBAUGH husband was born in 1794.

They had at least 2 children, Surbaugh siblings:

George W. Surbaugh md. Irena Nosler
Sophia (Johnston) – born 1-17-1823, married “Uncle Doc”, (Dr. Samuel P. Johnston) who was
Born Oct. 1818, and died 2-9-1883. They came to Ft. Madison in 5-5-1849. They had 8 children:
Johnston siblings:
Lenora (Waddington), 9-9-1848
Lizzie A., 1-8-1850
Helen (Webb), 9-12-1852
Fremont, 6-1-1856
Zina P., 11-2-1859
George Washington, 10-2-1859
Jennie, 3-20-1863
Rosa (Passmore), 11-15-1865
I found the family of Samuel P. Johnston and wife Sophie SURBAUGH, who was born in Virginia. THIS FAMILY ON THE 1850 CENSUS for District 13, Wapello, Iowa. (Where also lived George Washington SURBAUGH md. Irene Nosler, who named a son JOHN SHOBER SURBAUGH).

Suzanna Elizabeth SHOBER SURBAUGH'S father was Johann Simon Shober, who was from Switzerland. Married ?

Their children, Shober siblings:

Suzanna Elizabeth SHOBER md Unknown Surgaugh
Jacob Jay SHOBER– He had 4 sons named after the first 4 U.S. Presidents:
Shober siblings:
George Washington, who had 4 children
Samuel, who also had 4 children, one Ulysses S.
John Adams
Thomas Jefferson, who had 3 children, Frank, Oscar, and Mattie
James Madison, who had 3 children, Vance, William B. (a professor of chemistry at an eastern college), and Warren.

Johann Simon SHOBER's father was "Jacob Shober, who came to America from Switzerland".
This Shober info was from a letter from William B.
Shober to his second cousin, Florence Surbaugh, but date of letter is unknown.

BASICALLY THERE APPEAR TO BE SWISS SHOBERS AND GERMAN SHOBERS. BOTH LINES NAMED SONS AFTER PRESIDENTS CREATING A
CONFUSING MORASS.

I am having difficulty tracing the SWISS line.

Is there anyone out there who can help me?

Regards and my thanks,

Sharilyn Whitaker
