We here in northeast Tarrant County have a Civil War veterans monument in place, and are posting biographies and photographs of the men at our Genweb site. If you can add to the following biographical sketch, or could share any photos you might have of this veteran, his wife, or his home, we’d be happy to have them. Thanks for taking the time to read our query. Mike Patterson, Colleyville, Texas.
Wilson C. Shoffner was one of the early settlers and long a resident of Grapevine. He was born in February, 1830 in Tennessee to a Tennessean father and a North Carolinian mother.
His wife, Virginia, was born in February, 1827 in Tennessee to a Virginian father and a North Carolinian mother. Family sources at ancestry.com report that his wife’s maiden name was Virginia Evans. When the 1860 census was taken, he was a blacksmith in Bedford County, Tennessee,
W. C. Shoffner served in Co. H, 30th Texas Cavalry (Gurley's) (1st Partisan Rangers). He enlisted July 28, 1862 at Camp McCulloch, Texas. He brought with him a horse worth $150 and equipment worth $20. He is shown present on a muster roll for July and August, 1863. He was detailed to work in the company blacksmith shop on July 18, 1863.
When he registered to vote in Tarrant County on January 27, 1868, he said he was a native of Tennessee and had been living in Texas, Tarrant County, and Precinct 2 for seven years; thus he must have come to Texas immediately after the taking of the 1860 census in Bedford County, Tennessee. When the 1880 census of Tarrant County was taken, Mr. Shoffner and his family were living in Precinct 3 of Tarrant County..
In the 1900 census for Union Twp., Washita County, Oklahoma, Mrs. Shoffner said she had given birth to six children, only two of whom were still living. They included Martha Shoffner (born about 1854), Frederick A. Shoffner (born about 1856), and J. Allen Shoffner (born about1858), and Wilson M. Shoffner.(born about 1864).
A short notice of his death appeared in the Grapevine Sun for February 2, 1907 which says: “On Jan. 22, 1907 at the residence of W. E. Shoffner, Cloud Chief, Oklahoma, W. C. Shoffner aged 78 years died.”
