Hi Jane, I have been working on the Shorten genealogy for several years. So far , I have traced my William Shorten married to Sarah Payne in Bandon, Ireland in the 1850,s. I have a newspaper obit that states they were teachers both in Ireland and England. They went to USA in the 1855,s with their family, landed in New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi River to Albia, Iowa...thence to Fort Scott, Kansas. Their son, Richard Shorten married Amanda Hardesty in 1866 after the Civil War in Olatha, Kansas. They had eight children, one which was Ernest Augustus Shorten m: 1892 in Fort Scott, Kansas to Lulu Hotchkiss. Then they went to Pawnee, Oklahoma with their three children,Birdie, Flora and Earl(my husbands father). Ernest died of Typhoid fever in 1900. My husbands father married his wife Irene A. Brackett in Sand Springs, Oklahoma... I have not traced much back to Bandan, Ireland ..Have communicated from family from Ireland that has some more info about the siblings of William.....If this helps contact me . Donna
