George David Shortridge (George Dallas Shortridge?), CSA
I am researching George David Shortridge, whose name is also listed as George Dallas Shortridge, and particularly his Civil War record. He was a member of the DKE Fraternity at the University of Alabama before the War. I am the Alumni Historian for the Alabama DKE Chapter and am researching Alabama DKE's who fought in the War.DKE records list his name as George Dallas Shortridge, but I am now convinced that this is erroneous, and that the person in question is actually named George David Shortridge, Jr.The records I have under both names indicate that the person in question was a lawyer from Selma, Alabama, and the ages indicated for both names are consistent.
DKE records also show that he served as "1st Lt., Independent Cavalry, Confederate Army."I can't find an actual record of him having served in any cavalry unit, but I have found two different Confederate service records which pertain to him.
The first such record show that George D. Shortridge, Jr. served as 1st Lieutenant, Company C, 4th Alabama Infantry from May 1861 to April 1862.
The second such record shows that George D. Shortridge ("Jr." is omitted) served as Captain of Company I, 62nd alabama Infantry (1st Alabama Reserves) from April 1864 until the end of the war.Even though "Jr." is omitted from his name in this record, his age is listed as 28, so I feel confident this is in fact George Jr.
I would sincerely appreciate any info on him.I understand there is a collection of papers pertaining to his family at the University of Texas, but I would appreciate any help pending my getting to Austin to research those papers.
