Hubert,
I came across your post tonight as I was searching my grandfathers name.C W Shoemaker.I noticed that you trace your family ties back to a John Henry Shoemaker.I have a family history that was compiled in 1989. The record starts with a Johan Heinrich Schumacher( John Henry Shoemaker)and reads:"arrived in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania on the ship Crawford on October 25 1773.The Ship set sail from Rotterdam Holland.Johan Heinrich Schumacher served it the Revolution in 1780.He was sent to be a school teacher, probably by the Reformed church. He taught in or around the vicinity of Egypt, Whitehall Township, Lehigh County Pennsylvania.Around the year 1810 he and most of his family moved to Somerset county in Southwest Pennsylvania. He died in 1825."
He had two sons who remained in Lehigh Township Pa.This is the area where I grew up and where my family is located.
If this is of help to you I can supply you with more information. That information would be of the two sons, John Frederick and John Peter. However I would think that John or Johan would be a common name even 250 years ago.
Obviously Johan Heinrich named his two sons John.(Sounds like George Forman was not the first to pass on his name to all of his sons.)
Hope this gets you started.Let me know if the information is helpful.
Lee
