Ellen (Long) Shutes Hickerson Hopkins West (March 8, 1838 – January 30, 1902)
The Lansing Daily Journal Friday January 31, 1902 Mrs. Browning West. – Entered Into Rest Yesterday, Aged 63 Years. Mrs. Browning West died at her home, 1227 Piatt street, this city, at 11 a.m. January 30. She was formerly Mrs. Ellen Shutes and had been for twenty-three years a resident of Lansing. About two years ago she was married to Mr. Browning West, who is left now to mourn her loss. She had been in failing health for some time past with diabetes, but was only seriously ill a few days. She was a woman of strong character and bravely provided for her children during her widowhood until they could care for themselves, and today seven of them are left to mourn their irreparable loss. These are Mrs. Lida Hedges, George M. Shutes, Mrs. Esther Van Alstine, all of Lansing; James S. Shutes, Chicago; Stewart Shutes, Lansing; Mrs. Mary North, Battle Creek, and Egbert F. Shutes, Montana. Mrs. West was aged 63 years and 10 months. She left a number of grand-children, also two great grand-children, Halley and Stanley Opdyke. The time for the funeral will be announced later.
