There is an LDS file stating Cora M. Small is the daughter of Mary Sias and John Fillmore Small. This is repeated in some Sias family files I have seen. I disagree. In the 1870 Federal Census there is a Cora Small, 15, MI, domestic servant living in the household of John C. and Mary Sias with their 1 month old baby Jessie, in Jasper, Midland, MI. There is an LDS file taken from the marriage records of the Gratiot Co. Clerk giving a marriage date of 9 Oct 1864 for John Small and Mary Sias. Also in the 1870 Census is a John Small, 13, MI living in the same household as Mary's brothers, John A. and George Sias, in Pine River, Gratiot, MI, working as a farm hand. This leads me to believe that John Fillmore Small had two young children when he married Mary Sias and that on his death and her remarriage she did her best to make sure they were taken care of. She may have adopted Cora, but obviously the 1865 birth date for Cora is incorrect and may have been fabricated to fit with the marriage date.
