parents of Sarah (SIAS) SMITH of VT

In Vermont, there is a Sarah SIAS who married George W. SMITH ca. 1824 and is said by most secondary sources to be the daughter of Charles SIAS, Sr., (and, therefore, the sister of the James SIAS who married Patience DWIER). George W. & Sarah "Salley" SMITH appear in the 1850 Census of Newport, Orleans Co., VT (p. 134A, 91/91, enumerated 29 Jul 1850), living three doors down from James & Patience SIAS:

Geo Smith 44 M Farmer 950 Vt
Sally 44 F Vt
John 22 M Farmer Vt
Roxanna 20 F Vt
Lydia 19 F Vt
Sophia 15 F Vt
Edwin 12 M Vt

An age of 44 in 1850 means Sarah was born in 1805 or 1806, which makes her too young to be a daughter of Charles SIAS, Sr., whose children were born in the 1760s and 1770s. One's first thought is that Sarah might be the daughter of Charles SIAS, Jr., but she is too old to be his daughter because he didn't marry until 1808.

Given that George and Salley are living three doors down from James and Patience SIAS in the 1850 Census, I think it highly likely she is their daughter. Supporting this connection even more strongly is the fact that in the 1840 Census of Coventry, Orleans Co., VT, George & Sally are on the same page with James & Patience, who are the *only* SIASes in Coventry. Further, in the 1830 Census, George & Salley are in Derby, Orleans Co., VT, as are James & Patience, the former on p. 201 and the latter on p. 199.

The children of James & Patience (DWIER) SIAS are poorly known and too few considering the span of their marriage, so it is not at all unreasonable for Sarah to be their daughter, and the circumstantial evidence strongly supports it.

Please see family group sheet at:

Whether you agree with my hypothesis as to the identity of Sarah's parents or not, we should at least stop calling Sarah SIAS, wife of George W. SMITH, the daughter of Charles & Jane SIAS, because she is simply too young for that connection to be possible.
