Keith,
I am from the Waggoner line that moved to Leake Co., MS (James Merrill "Jemmie" & Susan Hillman Waggoner.) ALL of my MS Waggoners have "George Waggoner", (Jr. b.-1764)listed as "Jemmie's" father & Henry Holcomb Waggoner as Jemmie's brother. George the 3rd is listed as "JR." on my family research - but we know he would have to be the 3rd if his father was George (1764) & his GF was George (SR.- b. - 1720.) If the GF is dead, the grandson would assume the title of Jr. rather than the 3rd. This George #3 was the hatter, along with his younger brother Joseph S. Waggoner. Zacarrias was listed as the 5th son of George. No wife's name given.
If this is in fact true, it changes everything that is believed about the Waggoner family. I have been corresponding with Dick Waggoner, & I have used your research & his, along with everything else I could find to put in a POSSIBLE missing piece.
This is my reasoning:
It happened to the Waggoners. In most of the GenForum messages I have seen, Henry Holcomb Waggoner (1799 - m - Martha Avera) has been listed as the son of George (1720) & Elizabeth. These were his GRANDPARENTS. He had an uncle named Henry Holcomb that WAS the son of George #1 - & they get confused.
I also saw a posting asking about the fact that Mary & Elizabeth Sidwell would have been only 9 & 11 yrs. old at the time of the
marriage to James (Mary) & William (Elizabeth) Waggoner in 1785. I found a posting on Family Search, & this tells me there probably was another generation of children born to David (#2) & his wife Ruth (#2).If the parents had the same names (wife without last name in both cases) as the grandparents, and alot of the children had the same name - it is possible to combine them into one family, not two.(Like the Waggoners)
If Lydia was born in 1782 to Ruth & David Sidwell - it just makes sense to me there were 3 Davids.John (abt. 1700) & Mary Sidwell had David #1(abt. 1722-in West Nottingham Township, Chester Co., PA.)
David #1(abt. 1722) married Ruth?& had David #2 (abt. 1748). I believe this David also had a wife named Ruth?, thus confusing the generations, because they named the kids after their brothers & sisters. I think that David #3(abt. 1780) was the David that married ELIZABETH, & died in Morgan Co., GA in 1817, leaving 4 minor children. I think he was Lidia's brother.
There have been several reports of "Elizabeth Sidwell" marrying George Waggoner. We know from the marriage date (1785) that George #1's wife Elizabeth (1720) was not Elizabeth Sidwell. Her daughter-in-laws were the Sidwells. The "Wrightsboro Residents" web site lists David Sidwell & his family.I believe this is David #2 (1748) & Ruth #2.I think he may be the one that married Esther Stubbs. His daughter Elizabeth is listed a being married to a ____Waggoner - but her sister Mary is married to a ___King (I think) anyway it's NOT James Waggoner - but George Waggoner is listed among the residents. This too leads me to believe that there were 3 David Sidwells.(& 2 sets of Mary & Elizabeth, both sets with parents David & Ruth) Plus another set that were sisters of David #1 & children of John & Mary.
Another posting by an AVERA (Henry Holcomb Waggoner's(1799) wife's family) said George was married to Elizabeth Sidwell & listed the children correctly (according to my chart) but put 1811 as George's death date. This was the year his FATHER - George #1 died. Henry Holcomb was the only brother of Jemmie to have descendants. These were the only Waggoners the Averas were related to. Where did the name Elizabeth Sidwell come from? Why was George Waggoner listed among the residents of Wrightsboro if this is not true? Our family records say he lived in Wrightsboro. Since his son George #3 was born in 1785 - Elizabeth Sidwell had to be his 2nd wife, because she was abt. 12 yrs younger than George. The Waggoners tended to marry younger women. Who was his 1st wife? George #3 (hatter) never married & had no descendants.
Does this make any sense to you? If it is true - I am a Sidwell descendant too.I sure would like to prove or disprove this theory. The dates just don't make sense to me with only 2 David Sidwells. The 3rd one would explain alot.
